About JHSC Training

What Is a Joint Health & Safety Committee?

BC workplaces with 20 or more regularly employed workers are legally required to establish a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). All committee members must complete WorkSafeBC approved JHSC certification training.

A JHSC identifies workplace hazards, conducts monthly inspections, investigates accidents, and makes recommendations to management to improve safety conditions. The committee acts as the bridge between workers and employers on all health and safety matters.

A JHSC is a joint worker-management committee required under BC's Workers Compensation Act. It identifies workplace hazards, makes recommendations to improve safety, and conducts regular inspections. WorkSafeBC certification training is required for all JHSC members.
BC workplaces with 20 or more regularly employed workers must establish a JHSC. Smaller workplaces may be required by WorkSafeBC to establish one. All JHSC members must complete WorkSafeBC approved training.
The WorkSafeBC JHSC certification program consists of two parts. Part 1 is delivered online (self-paced). Part 2 is an in-person workshop. Total time is approximately 8–12 hours combined.
JHSC certificates do not expire, but refresher training is recommended every 3 years to stay current with WorkSafeBC regulation updates and best practices.
All JHSC members β€” both worker and employer representatives β€” must complete the training. Co-chairs, secretary, and all voting members should be certified.
The program covers WorkSafeBC regulations, hazard identification, inspection procedures, accident investigation, meeting procedures, recommendations to management, and effective committee operations.
